Based on the options you specify, Christian Thoing’s open source PWGen application will create strong passwords that you can use to protect your email account, Facebook account, and so on. On top of that, PWGen can generate a batch of passwords with a single mouse click, it can encrypt/decrypt the text copied to the clipboard, and it can generate files that contain nothing but random data.

PWGen works with any 32 or 64-bit Windows edition from Windows 95 onward. To get the application up and running on your PC, you must download a small executable, run it, and then click through a straightforward setup wizard. This setup wizard will help you install the application in one of two supported languages: English or German.

PWGen interface is made up of three sections: Settings (specify the settings for creating passwords), Generated Password (shows the password generated by the application), and Random Pool. At the top, in the upper left hand corner there’s a traditional File Menu, while in the right hand corner there are buttons for generating a file that contains nothing but random data, for encrypting/decrypting clipboard text content, for clearing the clipboard, for accessing the user manual, and for closing the application.

PWGen can generate single or multiple passwords. Hit the Generate button from the bottom right hand corner and the application will generate a password based on the settings you specify. Hit the Generate button next to Multiple Passwords and the application, by default, will quickly generate 100 passwords – again, based on your settings.

PWGen can also encrypt and decrypt text copied to the clipboard. To encrypt the text, you must left click the Padlock icon from the upper right hand side; to decrypt the text, you must right click the aforementioned icon.

Last but not least, PWGen can generate files that contain nothing but random data.

PWGen is an open source and free application.

PWGen quickly generates passwords, encrypts clipboard text content, and generates files made up of random data – and it does it all for free.

Pros

PWGen works with just about any Windows edition (32 and 64-bit flavors). Adjust the settings, then generate a password or a batch of passwords with a simple mouse click. The application can generate files made up of random data. It can also encrypt and decrypt text copied to the clipboard. PWGen is open source and free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
